Why does my back pain return after medial branch blocks in Candler-McAfee, Georgia?

Temporary relief can return because a medial branch block tests pain signals without permanently changing the nerve. A returning symptom pattern gives our physicians useful information for the next treatment discussion. We review your response, exam findings, and accident-related records before considering options such as radiofrequency ablation or another injection.

Medial Branch Blocks in Candler-McAfee: Treatment Planning After Temporary Relief

Medial branch blocks help our physicians study pain linked to facet joints in the neck or back. A short period of relief can support a more focused plan, while little or no relief may point toward another pain source.

This page answers a specific question for accident patients: what happens when the block helps, but the pain returns? We review the response with your exam, symptoms, and medical records. The decision may involve repeat care, a different injection, or discussion of radiofrequency ablation when the clinical findings support it.

The treatment does not repair every cause of back pain. Herniated discs, sciatica, radiculopathy, headaches, and soft tissue injuries may need different care. Our practice focuses on injuries caused by motor vehicle collisions, not primary care, urgent care, or workers’ compensation cases.

  • Record how your pain changes after the injection and when symptoms return.
  • Bring accident records, imaging reports, and medication information when available.
  • Ask how the response affects the next treatment choice.
  • Confirm that the suspected pain source matches the planned injection.

Service Overview

Medial branch blocks are targeted injections that temporarily reduce pain signals from small nerves near spinal facet joints.

  • A medial branch block differs from an epidural steroid injection because it targets facet-joint nerves, not the epidural space around a spinal nerve.
  • Premier Injury Specialists provides this care for eligible accident patients from Candler-McAfee and across Metro Atlanta.

What Temporary Relief Can Tell You

A clear response can help narrow the suspected source of facet-related pain.

Your follow-up plan is based on symptoms and findings, not relief alone.

The record can connect the treatment response with the documented accident injury.

A return of pain creates a reason to reassess the plan instead of ignoring the symptom.

Care stays focused on crash-related conditions within our pain management scope.

Process

Steps From Evaluation To Follow-Up

1

Review the accident injury

We assess the pain pattern, physical findings, medical history, and available records before selecting a treatment path.

2

Plan the targeted block

Our physician identifies the suspected facet-joint pain source and explains what the injection is intended to assess.

3

Record the treatment response

We compare your symptoms before and after the block and document whether the response supports the suspected pain source.

4

Discuss the next option

If relief is temporary, we review the findings and discuss continued care, another injection, or radiofrequency ablation when appropriate.

How We Approach the Next Treatment Decision

Relief guides the next discussion

A useful response can support discussion of radiofrequency ablation or related care. The block is not the right job for every pain source, including symptoms caused mainly by a herniated disc or radiculopathy.

Records stay connected to care

Our team links the examination, treatment response, and accident records in one medical record. That helps keep the plan focused on the injury being treated.

Physician-LED care stays personal

Board-certified physicians in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine create physician-led treatment plans with support from a certified physician assistant.

The staff (Tracy) and the medical folks are very nice. They explain everything to you in plain language before you even get started, and once you see doctor (Dr Scott), the assistant (Areyana) is gentle & sweet. They both will walk you through the entire process verbally, as they go and they make sure you are good before you leave as well. Above & beyond when it comes to bedside manner. Just make sure you don't get lost in the Kroger parking lot, listening to GPS. The clinic is inside Arrowhead across the street, behind Subway.

Questions About Temporary Relief And Spinal Injections

Before getting started, what happens if medial branch blocks provide temporary relief for a residential or commercial job?

Treatment planning uses temporary relief to guide the next care decision. Premier Injury Specialists reviews the amount of relief, how long it lasted, and whether your symptoms match facet-joint pain. The discussion may include radiofrequency ablation, another injection, or a different evaluation. Relief alone does not decide the plan, because your examination and accident records also matter.

How does a medial branch block differ from a facet joint injection?

A medial branch block targets small nerves that carry pain signals from facet joints. A facet joint injection places medication into or near the joint itself. Our physician chooses between them based on the suspected pain source and clinical findings. Both procedures differ from an epidural steroid injection, which addresses the space around spinal nerves.

Which records should I bring to the first appointment for Medial Branch Blocks?

Accident records, imaging reports, medication details, and prior treatment notes help our physicians assess the injury. Bring the documents you have, including information about earlier injections or changes in pain. Our team can explain which records matter for the planned evaluation. A referral is not listed as a requirement for discussing care with us.

When might radiofrequency ablation enter the discussion?

Radiofrequency ablation may enter the discussion when the clinical findings and block response support facet-related pain. The procedure uses controlled heat to affect selected pain-carrying nerves. Our physician reviews the limits and risks with you before planning it. A temporary response does not automatically make ablation appropriate.

Why can pain return after a targeted spinal injection?

Pain can return because the injection may reduce pain signals without treating every cause of the injury. Symptoms from discs, spinal nerves, muscles, or facet joints can follow different paths. We reassess the pain pattern and examination when relief fades. That review helps separate recurrence from a new or untreated pain source.

Can I discuss payment before scheduling treatment?

Yes, our practice can discuss payment arrangements before treatment is scheduled. We work with MedPay and attorney liens for eligible patients, which may avoid an out-of-pocket payment at the visit. Free consultations are also offered. Coverage and eligibility depend on the individual case, so our staff reviews those details with you.
