What Is a Bursa?

Bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac near a joint that reduces rubbing between bones, tendons, muscles, and skin. A bursa helps tissues move smoothly during shoulder motion. Irritation or swelling in this sac is called bursitis, which can cause pain with lifting, reaching, or lying on the affected shoulder.

Key Takeaways About Bursa

  • A bursa cushions tissues near a joint.
  • Shoulder bursitis often hurts during reaching or lifting.
  • A bursa is not the same as a tendon or joint capsule.

How Bursa Works

A bursa contains a small amount of slippery fluid. The sac sits where moving tissues might rub together. In the shoulder, it helps the rotator cuff tendons move beneath the upper shoulder bone.

Repeated pressure, an injury, or another shoulder problem can irritate the sac. The bursa may swell and become painful. A clinician checks your symptoms, shoulder movement, and tender areas to tell bursitis apart from problems involving the rotator cuff or joint capsule.

Shoulder pain from an irritated bursa often increases when you raise your arm. Resting the shoulder may not remove the cause if another condition continues to affect movement.

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

When we assess shoulder pain, we check whether symptoms fit irritation around the bursa or another shoulder structure. We compare your pain pattern with movement findings and the history of the injury. Our team also considers how bursitis may affect treatment planning for Shoulder Pain Treatment.

Bursa in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person develops shoulder pain after repeated overhead work and feels worse when reaching into a cabinet. The examination may suggest an irritated bursa, but the clinician also checks for rotator cuff problems.
