What Is a Vertebral Body?

A Vertebral Body is the thick, rounded front part of a spinal bone, also called a vertebra. Vertebral bodies stack to form the spine and carry much of its weight. Between them are discs that help absorb movement. Changes in a vertebral body can affect nearby nerves and contribute to back pain.

Key Takeaways About Vertebral Body

  • It forms the front, weight-bearing portion of a vertebra.
  • Its shape and condition help guide spinal treatment decisions.
  • It is not the same structure as the spinal cord.

How Vertebral Body Works

Vertebral Body

A vertebral body is the front section of a spinal bone. Its broad surface supports body weight as the spine carries and transfers loads. Vertebral bodies connect through discs and small joints, which allow controlled movement.

Related glossary terms: Lumbar Spine, Spinal Cord, Nerve Root.

Doctors review the vertebral body on imaging when assessing spinal stenosis. They may examine its height, shape, alignment, and relationship to nearby nerves. The lumbar spine contains larger vertebral bodies because it supports more weight. The spinal cord runs behind these bones inside the spinal canal.

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

When we assess spinal stenosis, we review the vertebral bodies as part of the full spine picture. We consider their alignment and nearby spaces alongside symptoms, examination findings, and imaging. This helps us connect structural changes with the pain or nerve symptoms you describe.

Vertebral Body in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with lumbar spinal stenosis may have narrowing near a vertebral body that reduces space for nearby nerves. During evaluation, the care team reviews that area with the rest of the spine and matches the findings to the person's symptoms.
